Seeing clearly

10.19.2015

Daily Grace

In the middle of a long struggle, I awoke one midnight knowing to my very core that God loved me completely and had been with me all those difficult days. I have always been thankful for that experience.

One of the ways I try to make God my sole vision is by looking for evidence of God in everything and everyone. Like the potter’s mark on the bottom of her pot, the divine fingerprint is on each thing the Creator brought into being.

It’s easy to see God in the familiar. Try, though, to expand that vision. Can you begin to see God in unexpected ways and places?

Find an object you would not ordinarily think of as holy and spend 15 minutes looking carefully at it. See what it can tell you of God’s actions in the world.

Once you’re comfortable seeing God’s fingerprint in unexpected ways, try it with people, too. How is God at work in your neighbor, friend, that stranger in front of you in the checkout lane?

God, open our hearts and eyes to see you in all that exists.

This message was adapted from “Be Thou My Vision” written by Debra K. Farrington that first appeared in the March 2008 issue of Lutheran Woman Today (now Gather) magazine. Today we remember Luke, the evangelist.
