I would submit that each of us is both a missionary and a mission field. We have learned enough through lifelong experiences and interactions to “be there” as missionaries for others in the character-building process. Each of us is likely part of the formation of many others – a responsibility we ought not take lightly. Often, we are unaware of our influence.
On the other hand, like mission fields where faith is continually growing, we are never done learning and evolving. By keeping our antennae out, we can face up to our own shortcomings. Because the formation process is never-ending, we must be open to the possibility that from time to time we may be mistaken. We are regularly in need of forgiveness and grace.
By paying attention to signs of God’s reconciling work in the world, we can recognize opportunities to accept and provide both companionship and guidance with integrity and generosity. As we attempt to better listen to God and the voices of our mentors, we too will be guided more fully toward God’s way.
