After Jacob wrestles with a mysterious stranger at the Jabbok river, Jacob says, “I have seen God face to face” (Genesis 32:22–32). Later still, Hosea (12:4) identifies Jacob’s opponent as an angel. So who transformed Jacob’s life that night—a man, an angel or God? The answer to the quiz is (d) all of the above. The signs of God are mysterious and may be more evident upon later reflection than at the moment they appear.
