While reading “Kitchen Table Philanthropy” a Women of the ELCA resource, I thought of my family and how our giving has progressed since Christmas Eve 2017.
I consider myself a church widow since my husband doesn’t come to church with me, and both of my kids quit coming to church after they were confirmed. For the last couple years, I have volunteered at our ministry, Loaves and Fishes, a soup kitchen in Columbia, Missouri, supported by area churches. In 2017, the Sunday I volunteer fell on Christmas Eve, which affected the number of volunteers.
I asked my family if they would help and they jumped at the idea. It warmed my heart to have my husband, daughter and son altogether in the soup kitchen. My daughter and her roommate now volunteer every month at Loaves and Fishes.
“And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds…” (Hebrews 10:24)
