“Mary? Martha?” Esther stands at the door of the sisters’ home, holding out a casserole she baked when she learned of the death of their brother, Lazarus. The setting is Bethany around the year 33. Esther is, of course, a fictional character added to a play. But the story plays out wherever the community of faith gathers to honor the dead.
