I will never worry about being stopped by the police or the need to teach my children what to do with their hands if they get stopped. Police have been protectors in the world I live in, but that is not true for all of God’s children. In some places across the globe, the rule of law is a ruse, and the power that comes with the uniform makes demands that must be met to stay safe. In some places, the perception of danger heightens the anxiety that makes a trigger finger faster, or vocabulary harsher, or suspicion more insistent.
God, through Jesus, you ask me to empathize with those who live at the bottom of the privilege ladder, not just to help but to understand and stand with them. How will I, in faith, address the inequities I will surely discover?
This message is an excerpt of “To see more deeply” by Catherine Malotky in the March 2018 issue of Gather magazine. Today we remember Erik, king of Sweden, martyr, who died in 1160.
