The Global Engagement travel to Guadalupe, Mexico to experience De La Mano Con Jesús – Hand in Hand with Jesus the brainchild of Becky Amaro Trevino also an IWL student and 2021 Wartburg College graduate. Returning home she saw a need and quickly turned an empty space behind the Evangelical Lutheran Temple “The Divine Redeemer” in the center of Guadalupe into a safe space for women and children displaced by a complex web of population growth, the unspoken impact of border politics and more. Starting in 2022 with a modest free clinic, the center celebrated its grand opening October 2024.
Their services and partnerships have expanded to reach more residents and migrants in the community now offering consultation service, food pantry and items needed for relatives of hospital patients that are outside the hospital in the winter elements. This experience is perfect for health care providers who would like to lend a hand and learn alongside this busy hub that pivots to meet needs as they arise.
Practicing accompaniment (coming along side) will nurture time for sharing stories and skills as well as experiencing the view from the other side of the border. Along with your daily work you will experience community in worship, fellowship, bible study, the marketplace and dancing on the plaza. Your home away from home will be a familiar chain hotel in the area.
