Celebrate the end of the Capital Campaign with a lecture and reception: Luther, Love and Marriage

Come Celebrate the end of the Capital Campaign!

The campaign for Katie’s Fund began in June 2022 and ends on June 13, 2025 (Katy and Martin Luther’s Wedding Day). To celebrate the anniversary, their marriage, Katie’s life, and the end of the capital campaign, please come to a lecture with a reception following at Paddlefish Brewery!

There will be a brief prayer service that includes a play about Katie and Martin Luther performed by Gustavus students, a short talk about the brewing processes Katie would have used, and how brewers like Katie made Wittenberg known throughout all of Germany. In addition, the Rev. Dr. Diane Bowers will deliver the lecture, “Shocking and Necessary: The Marriage of Katharina von Bora and Martin Luther as an Act of Love and Resistance,” at Christ Chapel. Plus, you can learn about how Paddlefish Brewery created a special Katie’s Ale!

Read below to RSVP to attend in person, or attend the lecture virtually by visiting the Women of the ELCA website.

Shocking and Necessary: The Marriage of Katharina von Bora and Martin Luther as an Act of Love and Resistance

Although one of the objectives of the Protestant reforming movement was the reform of the estate of marriage, Luther himself did not marry until relatively late, in 1525. Luther’s marriage to Katherina von Bora was considered ill-timed by his friends and an abomination by his Roman Catholic opponents. Why did Luther marry when he did? Despite the controversy, the Luther marriage was strong and loving from the start and strengthened and served the Protestant Reformation as a whole. The Rev. Diane Bowers, Ph.D., is a theologian and Luther scholar, and currently serves as an interim pastor. She has taught at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and, for several years, led the Luther Reading Group, a discussion group for clergy and lay people. Dr. Bowers, her husband, Hans-Christian Kasper, and their six-year-old son, Elijah, all live in Berkeley, where the adults enjoy hospitality, train travel, and the beauty of California. Elijah enjoys being as active as possible. Download a brochure.

Celebrate the end of the Capital Campaign for Katie’s Fund with Katie’s Ale

Throughout June, Paddlefish Brewing is partnering with the Katie’s Fund campaign. $1 from every pint of Katie’s Ale sold during these month(s) will be donated to support the Women of the ELCA.

Katie’s Ale is a smooth, German pub-style bock beer featuring rich malt character and a crisp, clean finish. Easy-drinking yet full of flavor—perfect for raising a glass to Katie’s legacy!

Katie’s Ale | 7.2% ABV | 18 IBU A traditional German Eisenbock
brewed in the style Martin Luther would’ve known. Unlike a lager, this strong ale is fermented warm, creating a rich, malty profile with classic fruit and clove notes. Bold yet smooth, it shares qualities with early Belgian ales and offers a flavorful nod to brewing history.

Food Truck:
Minnesota’s Original Brat Dogs will be on-site from 4-9pm
