Women of the ELCA joins the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the wider Church in mourning the passing of retired Bishop Patricia Ann Curtis Davenport.
Retired Bishop Davenport was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, a courageous leader, and a trailblazer whose life transformed the Church. In 2018, she became the first African American woman elected as a bishop in the ELCA, opening doors for generations of women and leaders who would follow. Her ministry was marked by wisdom, humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to proclaiming the Gospel and advancing God’s justice.
“As someone who had the privilege of being present for Bishop Davenport’s installation in Philadelphia in 2018, I witnessed history unfold,” said Sheena Foster, President of Women of the ELCA. “I came to know Bishop Davenport as a leader of remarkable wisdom, grace, and deep faith. She generously shared her mentorship and encouraged so many of us to lead with courage, humility, and love. Her legacy will continue to shape the Church and inspire generations of women who answer God’s call.”
As women of faith, we give thanks for retired Bishop Davenport’s extraordinary witness and the countless lives she touched through her pastoral leadership, mentorship, and steadfast devotion to Christ. Her legacy reminds us that faithful leadership is rooted not in power, but in service, and that God’s call knows no barriers.
We hold Bishop Davenport’s children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and the people of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod in our prayers during this time of grief. May they find comfort in the promise of the resurrection and the assurance that, as Scripture reminds us, “Whether we live or whether we die, we belong to the Lord” (Romans 14:8).
May retired Bishop Patricia Ann Curtis Davenport rest in the eternal peace of Christ, and may her legacy continue to inspire women and leaders throughout the Church for generations to come.
