A woman of faith and action
by Daily Grace

Just a child when her mother died, she was placed in a convent at age 10 after her father remarried. Escaping the convent at age 23, she went on to experience homelessness, poverty and the devastating deaths of those she loved most, including two daughters.

And yet, this sister from 500 years ago demonstrated her unique personality and character as she moved from one phase of her life to the next. Described as “doctor, preacher, brewer, gardener, judge of the pig market, and whatsoever else she may be,” her list of skills could also include accountant, real-estate investor, theologian, psychologist, mother and challenger of the status quo.

Today we celebrate Katharina von Bora Luther, a woman of faith who we see as an example as we live into our calling.

This message was adapted from “Whatsoever Else She May Be” by Terry Bowes that appeared in the July/August 1997 issue of Lutheran Woman Today (now Gather) magazine. Today we remember Katharina von Bora Luther, renewer of the church, who died  in 1552.
