Just as the Spirit of God called Sojourner Truth to live our her truth through public speaking on behalf of slaves and women, God is calling me to write my way into my own truth.
Sojourner could have given up the first time she was abused and beaten. She did not. Sojourner could have given up when she was sold for $100 and some sheep. She did not. Sojourner could have given up after her children were sold and stolen from her. She did not. Sojourner could have even settled down into a private life once she had won back her precious son, Peter. But she didn’t stop. Sojourner Truth maintained a public presence of demanding dignity and justice for all people.
If Sojourner Truth could stand up against the racism, sexism and classism that tried to break down her soul and deny her full humanity, then surely I can follow in her footsteps and continue the work of helping to eradicate those same “isms” in her name…in my name.
This message is excerpted from “Sojourner” by Sojourner White in the March 2018 Gather magazine. Today we commemorate Harriet Tubman, 1913, and Sojourner Truth, 1883; renewers of society.
