Pool therapy

I go to “core strengthening” classes in a therapy (warm water) pool at a place called OPC – Older People’s Commission – which is why everyone calls it OPC!

As I diligently try to follow the instructor, I am quiet. I look around at the others and notice their obvious scars from assorted surgeries. I often feel annoyed at the conversations that drown out our leader’s directions that can lead us toward healthy, strong, upright, slimmer, better lives. Or so I think.

Then I realize that this therapy is buoyed by the companionship of others. People who understand failed joint replacements and children who live faraway. I recognize the support that comes from phone calls or smiles or greetings.

I look at the visible scars and realize God sees our beauty and knows our hearts. I am buoyed by that assurance. I think of baptism as I move in the healing waters of friendship. I acknowledge that I am in a true therapy pool, and I am thankful.

This message is excerpted from “Buoyed by companionship” by Barbara Miller from the July 2, 2015, blog of the Women of the ELCA. Today we commemorate Philipp Nicolai, 1608; Johann Heerman, 1647; Paul Gerhardt, 1676; hymnwriters.
