If I look to the stories of creation, I know God’s breath brought order, sweeping through the chaos, forming words that gathered up light and dark, land and water, rock and soil and creature. It was God’s breath that transformed the first earthling into a living being.
It is then no wonder that when we stop and breathe, when we focus on our breath, we are calmed. We can find our center, the God-within-us, and time to reflect, to be mindful, to distinguish what is other and what is true on the inside. When we do this from the perspective of faith, we can prayerfully listen and be called by you into wisdom, mercy and service.
This message is an excerpt of “Gratefully humble” by Catherine Malotky in the November 2017 issue of Gather magazine. Today we remember George Herbert, hymnwriter, who died in 1633.
