Amid the darkness that threatens to engulf the world, among the lost that we encounter every day, in the middle of the confusion of a million clamoring claims of the hearts of humankind, right there where people live grasping, grabbing, desperate lives—God has set perfect light; God’s treasure in common clay pots; God’s stars pointing the way. That’s us. Jesus’ disciples. As the Spirit lives in us, we are effective, active, alive, and worthy disciples. Harried, hurried, doing what we can. Yet we are the disciples who shine in this dark world with God’s brilliance, like stars lighting up the skies with eternal hope.
This message is adapted from “Discipleship” written by Ted Schroeder in the June 1992 issue of Lutheran Woman Today (now Gather) magazine. Today is the fourth Sunday after Pentecost.
