Caring for creation
by Daily Grace

All around the world natural wonders abound. As people of God, we are called to care for them all. One of the ELCA’s first social statements, adopted in 1993, is “Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope and Justice.”

We know each of us is called to do our small part to care for God’s creation. My friend Betty carries her water bottle with her to restaurants. If she has drinking water left in her restaurant glass, she pours it into her water bottle and takes it with her.

“Even as we join the political, economic and scientific discussion, we know care for the earth to be a profoundly spiritual matter,” reads our “Caring for Creation” social statement. “Despite human actions that result in harm to our planet and our suffering neighbors overseas, God is in, with and under the earth, redeeming it and the rest of creation.”

This message is an excerpt from “Earthwise: Liminal time” by Terry L. Bowes in the October 2017 issue of Gather magazine. Today we observe the Transfiguration of Our Lord.
