Caring for the Earth—1 of 2

Green grass. Blue water. Bright skies. Take a moment to consider all the natural elements of the world around you. Take a deep breath of fresh air. Sip a cool glass of water. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face. Imagine what your life would be like without the environmental bounty that we take for granted.

Whether on Earth Day (tomorrow) or any other day, caring for the earth is always timely. Any time we increase our commitment to caring for the earth, we show gratitude for its riches to our gracious and generous God.

We possess an incredible authority over creation that goes all the way back to Adam and Eve. When did you last take the time to explore that dominion and consider what it means for you as an individual and for us as a people?

Read the ELCA social statement on the environment. Perhaps you will be inspired to celebrate the earth by gathering a group and using the “Caring for the Earth as God’s People” resource.

Creator God, inspire me to make good choices to care for all your creation.

Today we commemorate Anselm, Bishop of Canterbury, who died this day 1109. This message was adapted from the “Caring for the Earth as God’s People” resource available from the Women of the ELCA website.
