The Bottom Line, a weekly newsletter where I work featured a headline: “New Year Resolutions . . . for the Birds!”
Why? Because each and every day begins with a new opportunity.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (English Standard Version)
“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (ESV)
We have all heard the joke—do you know how to make God laugh? Tell God your plans.
Many of us are planners, anyway. We want to know what is happening today, next week, next year. Or we have a goal in mind and plan the steps to reach the goal. Or we are list makers: grocery lists, to-do lists or maybe even honey-do lists. Being able cross off an item helps us feel as if we have accomplished something.

As 2016 comes to an end, many of us will spend time reflecting on this past year. We will read journal entries and reflect on them. We will wonder what 2017 holds for us. We will list the items we want to accomplish next year.
Those are not resolutions in my book. They are dreams, ambitions, hopes.
As you reflect on 2016 and ponder 2017, remember to let God help you with your heart plans.
I encourage you to consider joining me in Minneapolis for the Women of the ELCA Tenth Triennial Gathering, July 13-16. It’s a time to meet old friends and make new ones. It’s a time to let your heart grow and experience new opportunities. It’s a time to hear God speak to you! You will leave a different woman: one who has grown in her faith.
Remember, each day begins with a new opportunity.
