This fourth Sunday of Advent is known as the LOVE candle Sunday. As I researched the significance of this candle, I’m reminded that, in addition to being called the “Candle of Love,” it’s also known as the Angel’s Candle. As we continue to prepare ourselves for the boundless love of Christ coming upon us at Christmas, this candle reminds us of how much God loved us that he chose to send Jesus into our world to give us eternal life. That truly is an act of love!
In our gathering hymn at my church last Sunday, we sang a favorite Advent song of mine, “People Look East” (ELW 248). The text comes from Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965), and the last verse ends with this phrase, “Love, the Guest, is on the way.” Love, the Guest, is whispering to us this Advent season, reminding us of the transforming power of divine love. Calling us to illumine the dark places, inviting us into those spaces, bringing compassion, empathy and action. These acts of love can transform us individually, changing our attitude toward others and the world and even toward our beloved community of Women of the ELCA.
As you continue your Advent waiting and prepare for the glorious celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas, may you be still and quiet and listen for the whisper of this divine Guest of Love. Perhaps this year, you will hear God’s message of Love in a new and profound way.
Have a blessed Christmas holiday!
