Every summer, I reflect on what I have accomplished so far in the year. Then I check my to-do list and my goals for the remainder of the year.
This summer, I helped staff Women of the ELCA’s exhibit in the Adult Leaders space at the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans, July 16-July 21. There, we connected with adult leaders and shared about Women of the ELCA resources and how they can be more engaged with women doing ministry in their congregations and communities. Through a spin-the-wheel game we gave away WELCA swag and everyone had a chance to win a free registration to the next Triennial Gathering, held in Des Moines in 2026.
I enjoyed hearing stories from visitors to our space about how Women of the ELCA inspired them to act boldly on their faith. Similarly, I’m happy to have played a small part so they can share what they learned about this life-giving community back home.
Me time
Each day seems to pass too quickly as I try to fit so much into my schedule. But it’s time to take time for me. I spent several days this summer with my family on a trip where I relaxed. Graduation dinners and parties filled many days of my summer as the young adults in my life prepared to enter college.
Through these events, I create new memories and stories to share for years to come.
Not only will I try to relax my body this last week of summer, but I’ll also take time to care for my mind and spirit. Before I can live out Women of the ELCA’s purpose statement of promoting healing and wholeness in the church, society and world, I’ll need to practice healthy living myself.
Women tend to put themselves last when it comes to caregiving, and it’s time to change that.
Does your schedule seem to grow each year? If you fill your days with planning your next activity, consider making time for yourself.
I love this quote from Kobi Yamada, an inspirational author, that reminds me what will happen if I don’t take care of myself. “Be good to yourself. If you don’t take care of your body, where will you live?”
Resources that help
Women of the ELCA has several free downloadable resources that can help you practice healthy living.
Some I recommend are about journaling, book clubs, and carving out a sacred space just for you. Take a look at our resources and create time and space for yourself.
Enjoy laughter or meditation or create the space or activity that will inspire you to promote healing and wholeness in yourself.
How do you take time to relax?
