Last week, after camp, my daughter played in a splash pad. Immediately, she met another child and the two of them splashed and giggled and became fast friends.
They created a game involving the giant water bowl that stood several feet above them. It took a few minutes for the bowl to overflow before it would wobble back and forth and eventually tip over, drenching them below. At first, they stood waiting to get soaked. Later, they sat together, holding each other, bracing each other for impact. And then, after the water had emptied, one of them would pop up and help the other to their feet to play again. I realized that this image of them was a perfect metaphor for friendship.
Our friends hold us, hold space for us and help us brace for impact. After the rain passes, they help us up so we can play again.
July 30 is International Friendship Day. Women of the ELCA will celebrate this month with a friendship-themed Boldcafe monthly dinner event on Thursday, July 11, at 7 pm (CDT). The Rev. Amy Waelchli will lead the conversation on the topic of friendship. We’ll also share photos and stories of our friends during our time together. Register here.
Whether you find yourself at a splash pad or not, I hope this month you are reminded that “sweet friendship refreshes the soul.” (Proverbs 27:9 MSG )
