Today, 10.11.12, is International Day of the Girl. The United Nations has established a global girls’ rights day that will be celebrated on October 11 each year. This movement was written by School Girls United to speak out against gender bias and advocate for girls’ rights everywhere.
This day promises to be a historic and commemorative day and will bring attention to the voice of young girls across the globe. Women of the ELCA has been making a real difference in the total health of women and girls through our churchwide health initiative.
Through the health initiative, we are committed by our purpose statement to promoting healing and wholeness in our church, society, and world. Making a real difference in the total health of women begins at the “heart” of the matter: being physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually healthy and balanced women.
Women in 17 congregational units have shared their inspiring stories and efforts to support the health initiative Raising Up Healthy Women and Girls. You can make a difference on this day and in your community by learning more about your health and advocating for girls. Read how women and girls are supported by their efforts through a seed grant from the churchwide health initiative. Together, we can make a difference.
Get your creative juices flowing for your unit and apply for a seed grant. How have you mobilized women and girls in your community to live healthy lives?
