Katherine (Kate) Sprutta Elliott, editor of Gather magazine (previously Lutheran Woman Today) from 2005-2015, died November 12, 2021.
Under Elliott’s editorial leadership, Lutheran Woman Today magazine became known as Gather in 2011. “Kate led a thorough and thoughtful process that led to the rebranding,” noted Linda Post Bushkofsky, executive director. “This was a significant contribution to the life of Women of the ELCA, launching us on a path of repositioning the magazine to reach women of different generations and church backgrounds.”
“Kate possessed a deep understanding of scripture, a deft touch with her editing pen and a wry sense of humor shared freely with those who knew her,” observed Elizabeth Hunter, editor of Gather.
“She was a talented editor and colleague, and she had a great sense of humor,” echoed Elizabeth McBride, editor of Café. “We are grateful for her time on staff of Women of the ELCA and we cherish our memories of her.”
Previously Elliott was editor of Seeds for the Parish, a publication of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (1999-2005) and associate editor of Lutheran Woman Today (1995-1999).
Arrangements were at the convenience of her family.
The women (and men) of the ELCA have lost a talented and faithful servant. Kate was a valued friend and my colleague on two Lutheran Woman Today and Gather magazine Bible study projects. I very much appreciated her editorial guidance—always delivered with humility and humor and granting me latitude to address occasionally controversial issues. I also have happy memories of sharing meals “on the road,” when she showed up to cheer me on during Bible study workshops. Thank you, dear Kate. May you rest in the peace you deserve.
So very sorry to hear about Kate’s passing.
