Mallory Matthews of Newberry, S.C., called Women of the ELCA offices recently to see if the letter she received awarding her a scholarship was authentic. When I answered yes, she and her colleagues listening in the background screamed and cheered.
Jennifer Cartensen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, wrote us a note when she learned she was a scholarship recipient. “Thank you for your confidence in me! This scholarship will help with my financial and educational goals.”
Mallory and Jennifer were among eight women who received a total of $20,500 for the 2017–18 academic year from Women of the ELCA. All eight were recipients of scholarships for Lutheran laywomen.
Scholarship applications are due Feb. 15, 2018.
Others who received scholarships were: Mackenzie Alexander, Eastampton, N.J.; Cindy Arnett, Santa Clara, Calif.; Sarah Desjarlais, Dilworth, Minn.; Rudy Kelly, Traverse City, Mich.; Yvonne Offill, Claremont, Calif.; and Teri Watkins, Anchorage, Alaska.
The 2018–19 scholarship application opens Dec. 15 and closes Feb. 15. Scholarships are offered to laywomen and those entering the ministry. Learn more about the scholarships available and the application process. Email [email protected] with questions.
Donations to the scholarship fund are accepted.
I know of no one any more deserving than Mallory Matthews. She is an awesome young lady with a lot of faith, determination and drive. Way to go Mallory; you make us all proud.
Mallory is my daughter who works a full time job; a part-time job; and attends Piedmont Technical College. We are extremely proud of her and we thank WELCA for awarding her this scholarship money.
Sebrena, it is our good pleasure. These scholarships were established long ago by bold women who had a vision for women today. Mallory is a bold woman and we are happy to know that she and the WELCA unit at your church are active participants in the organization. I encourage you and Mallory to invite women to financially support the scholarship program that we will continue the vision of the bold founders. Blessings on this semester!
