Our Run, Walk and Roll takes place July 26 in the Romare Bearden Park, a 5.4-acre parcel located in Charlotte’s Third Ward. The fitness and cultural arts venue, which opened last fall, includes spaces to sit, relax and walk interspersed with beautiful water fountains. Not to be missed are the interactive digital chimes, including dance chimes.
So who was Romare Bearden? Bearden (1911-1988) was a prolific artist who worked in collages, watercolors, oils, photomontages and prints. The work of this Charlotte-born artist is included in many public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Two of his collages appeared on the covers of Fortune and Time magazines.
He was also a writer, often addressing art and social issues. A man with many interests and gifts, he also designed costumes and sets for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Nanette Bearden’s Contemporary Dance Theatre.
