Have you considered writing a personal statement of purpose? As individuals, how are we committed to living our faith? A personal purpose statement helps us make decisions and boldly step forward in faith. It brings and binds what is true for our lives, and cuts away what is inauthentic. We can return to our personal purpose statement daily, praying it into our lives and living it out. How we see ourselves is reflected in everything we say or do – where we work, play, go to school, or go to church; with our families and friends; and how we serve our communities. It affects who we are and who we will become.

Questions to reflect upon as you create your purpose statement: What gives my life meaning? What do I want to be in my life? When I look at my life and work, what activities do I consider of greatest worth? What is a task God has given me? What could I do if I were 10 times bolder?

This message is excerpted from “I am She,” a 2009 resource of the Women of the ELCA.
