A mix of unconditional love for creation as it is and constant re-creating, re-forming and renewing of creation is woven throughout the texts of the season after Epiphany. These are texts where light shines persistently, constant love is revealed in new ways and God’s identity is shown in ways that are both new and consistent. The love of God, revealed in the embodied Christ, is the source of our renewal, light and joy. It changes us. It makes us who we are and who we are becoming.
There is a song we’ve been singing often at Luther College (Decorah, Iowa) this year, based on a poem by the 14th century Iranian poet Hafez. This song seems to fit the light and dark days of the season after Epiphany:
“I wish that I could show you
I wish that I could show you
Whenever you are lonely or walking
in the dark.
I wish that I could show you
I wish that I could show you
The astonishing light of your being.”
