When I was a little girl, I loved nothing better than reading. What I knew about books as a child remains true now: These written works have power. They offer another perspective. They invite my empathy They usher me into experiences I might never have otherwise.
The spiritual practice of interacting with someone else’s thoughts and dreams is one I can’t recommend enough. Reading opens up faithful conversations by making it possible to connect with words from all over the world. When a book really grabs me, like Debbie Blue’s Consider the Women, or Amy Peterson’s Where Goodness Still Grows, I’m inspired to talk about it with the people in my life. Reading gets me beyond the surface with people, into discussing things that matter.
I’m continually caught unaware by the power of a few words strung together and shared. When I’m looking, I almost always find spiritual treasure.
