The bowl that holds the “tossed salad” that is our nation—a lively and satisfying salad once treasured for the variety of ingredients that were added to it by all sorts of people—that bowl seems to be cracking.
How I wish I could go to troubled families and make everything all right for them! I want to promise them safety and freedom, respect and love. I want to take on the brokenness of families close to me and those farther away and make them whole.
Instead my role is to pray for the broken, to advocate for them at every opportunity and to donate to agencies who respond to their pain. I can feel the brokenness of others. But I can’t make them well. Only God in Jesus can do that. Healing will happen now, or in the months or years ahead, or in the life to come. All of us will be made new.
This message is an excerpt of “Broken” by Susie Gamelin in the March 2018 issue of Gather magazine. Today we observe Memorial Day, a federal holiday for remembering the people who died while serving in the Armed Forces.
