Every year as Advent begins, I am impressed once again by Mary’s monumental role in the nativity narrative. Mary’s willingness, flexibility and utter surrender to God’s plan make her into a kind of Christmas superhero. Mary believed wholeheartedly that she could be part of a bigger plan.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, the Wonder Woman of Advent, was as human as any of us. It must have been so overwhelming for her to take this life-changing risk. In agreeing to carry the child of God, Mary ensured that her life could never be the same as it once was.
But like Wonder Woman, Mary dedicated her life to furthering a cause based on the idea that love is stronger than any other form of power. This year, as Advent begins, I hope we give close attention to the wondrous story of Mary. May we see her strength in all the Wonder Women around us.
