While most people these days have a smartphone equipped with GPS, my car console is littered with scraps of paper that have routes scribbled in the corners. These notes have helped me navigate to a variety of destinations. When I get lost, I call a friend.
Gert is often one of the first people I call. I never consider our age difference. I just know Gert’s steady presence is something I admire. I need that kind of guidance more than a GPS. I need people like Gert, people further down the path who are also able to show me the way. When Gert tells me it’s going to be okay, she has the scars to prove it.
