Let’s consider giving the baby Jesus the gift of humility. Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu explains the power of humility like this: “The rivers and seas lead the hundred streams, because they are skillful at staying low.” What a wonderful image – streams flow willingly into the rivers and seas, not because the rivers and seas hold themselves up, but because rivers and seas lower themselves in the land, so water can naturally flow to them. We, too, might consider lowering ourselves so that others can better connect with us.
Looking for “humility” gift ideas? Try listening more. Everyone is dealing with something, although we may not see it immediately. People love to pretend that everything is perfect and lovely. But notwithstanding the faces people show, everyone is fighting some type of battle, especially during the holidays.
Blogger Therese Borchard applies this to dealing with family during the holidays. She suggests helpful ways to address family pressure, including: Don’t take everything personally. Wait before you speak. Listening can also bring us much needed empathy during this season.
