Confronted by writing the truth about clergy sexual abuse in The Lutheran magazine in 2002, one had to distinguish nice from good. It was uncomfortable and painful. But the stories needed to be told so the abuse could be understood and stopped. Pretending these things never happened wouldn’t help victims heal. Telling the truth was the good thing to do. Nice avoids conflict; good does what matters.
