Once I encountered my niece digging through the dress-up bin in the house where I grew up, mixing and matching her way into an alternate identity. I asked if she liked to wear Grandma’s clothes to be like Grandma. “No,” she said. “I like to be reminded that Grandma is a lot like me.” It is good to remind ourselves that most of the people Jesus encountered were a lot like us, especially when we feel our own faith lives do not measure up.
This message is an excerpt from “As God sees us” by Audrey West, in the July/August 2017 issue of Gather magazine. Today we remember Johann Konrad Wilhelm Loehe, renewer of the church, who died in 1872.
