The United Nations commission that coordinates the U.N.’s work on water and sanitation says, “Water is complex because it is linked to almost everything in the world…water is a precondition for human existence and for the sustainability of the planet.”
In the word of God, water was before all else. It means something that water is named in the second verse of the very first book of our Holy Scripture. Water is the source of all life. Water’s sacredness and transforming power is named throughout the Bible.
The water that nourishes us, cleanses us, baptizes us, and restores us does not come from an endless faucet. Water comes from a loving, merciful God – a God who has instructed us to be caretakers of this life-giving resource. We are not called to disrupt the flow of water, but to honor it, respect it, and teach our grandchildren, children, and even our peers to have the same reverence for it through the water habits we model each day.
