We are so quick to protect ourselves and our fragile sense of control over our lives. We are quick to blame others for their misfortune, quick to look for reasons to explain away our own vulnerability, and quick to shore ourselves up, wall ourselves in, and create the illusion that we are safe and secure.
Our mortality is always just under the surface, so too our vulnerability and our insufficiencies. We build a wall around ourselves to shield ourselves from these truths. We jump to judgment, an unconscious deflection, lest we be outcast, lest our fortunes change, lest we become the ones others abandon.
O God, give us courage to see that real security is built of love, among and for all your children.
