Rules are curious things. They are necessary, to be sure. It is wise and good that elementary children don’t get to establish lunchroom, hallway or classroom rules. But in many other cases, rules have had far more nefarious purposes, not the least of which were to negatively affect those already subjugated, if not oppressed.
