The motivation for keeping the Sabbath is that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. Jesus begins his ministry by going to the synagogue on the Sabbath and proclaiming that the Jubilee promise of liberation and forgiveness is fulfilled in him for the sake of all people. Jesus healed on the Sabbath, thus promising release from the burden of constricting law that undermined the mercy of God. Jesus offers true rest for the weary who carry heavy burdens. As we remember the Sabbath, we know we are created and saved people of God.
