Water can indeed become holy – whether standing in a baptistry filled just for the occasion or a chlorinated swimming pool, whether poured from a silver shell in the hospital neonatal unit or a plastic cup in the emergency room. You and I can access that same baptismal water, touched by the Spirit – any time. What may sometimes seem a trivial move, dipping our fingers into the baptismal font, is a fierce reminder that we are all connected.
So, the next time you walk by the baptismal font, why not make a splash? Feel the power in that water, joining you to the whole communion of saints. Give thanks for what we believe, though can hardly envision: that God’s wide net of love encircles the whole grand parade of saints since the beginning of time! Touch your forehead with holy water. Let it enfold you in this promise: All the saints are with you, alive in Christ! Now that’s a big splash.
