You know the old proverb “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”? It so often applies to my prayer life. I intend to pray regularly, to listen and to talk with God, but life intervenes, and my good intentions go by the wayside.
Because I know this about myself, I try to be much more intentional about prayer. I’ve found that combining prayer with a physical act helps me stay true to my intentions.
I know several women who fill their morning walks with prayers. Some pray while they stand at the kitchen sink, washing dishes. Others offer prayers while driving to and from work. Still others pray with their bodies through dance or yoga. Some women combine their use of an electronic device, like a smart phone or tablet, with prayer.
Advent, the beginning of the church year, is as good a time as any to start. I pray that as we enter this Advent season, you may be more attentive to prayer, as Jesus comes, bringing light and love to our darkened world.
This message is an excerpt from “Acts of Prayer” by Linda Post Bushkofsky in the December 2017 issue of Gather magazine. Today is the first Sunday of Advent.
