Prayer is comforting: a soft, warm blanket in which to wrap a reaching soul. Prayer is humbling: We cannot even number our sins, let alone our needs. Prayer is bold: What kind of chutzpah does it take to approach I Am Who I Am? Prayer is grace: We don’t deserve it; we can’t earn it; we didn’t even think it up. Grace is simply lavished upon us, splashed wildly everywhere, as TV character Archie Bunker used to say, “free for nothing.”
When we pray, we go before the One who has endowed us with the capacity to think, the ability to choose, the right to inquire, the desire to listen and the need to learn.
