For the past three years I have been struggling with missing a special someone that I have never had. I’ve moved four times for school. I left a stable but soul-sucking job for…well, I am not exactly sure what yet. I’ve had a handful of friends get married and start families as I approach 50.
Jesus knew that we would need help with our longing. Jesus knew this and took on flesh anyway to be with us in this world full of glory and grace and truth (John 1:14). Jesus chooses to sit beside us while we’re full of envy, despair, resignation or even disbelief.
That kind of love is bigger than the love I think I want. Divine love engulfs and subsumes the stuff I think I am missing. Faith is knowing that Jesus is always there, with arms outstretched on the cross, his hands open to you and me, holding a gift of peace for us in the midst of our pain.
