The word salvation derives from soteria, a Greek word meaning health, healing, and wholeness. When someone suffers, she or he feels the opposite of saved. One who suffers feels unwell, broken and adrift. Too often, giving voice to the pain of loss or grief can feel disrespectful and even unfaithful.
But if we are the people of God, we lament not to the air, but to God. Lament is, in fact, an act of faith. It is an expression of our trust in the primary gospel, the Good News, the message of our Christian tradition that death does not win.
This message is an excerpt from “Session 2 of the Bible study, No hard feelings” by Anna Madsen in the October 2019 issue of Gather magazine.
