You are not nice, God. Nice is about not upsetting the status quo. Nice is about not creating friction. Nice is an avoidance tactic, a way to skip having to engage. It’s emotional small talk. You, God, call us into significant talk, not small talk. Was Jesus being nice when he directed his followers to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44)? Give us the courage to engage.
