In the person of Jesus Christ, God most certainly chooses to side with the poor. Much of Jesus’ ministry deals with the disparity between the rich and the poor. Jesus spoke frequently about wealth, challenging all of us with access to it.
Two thousand years removed from the incarnational evidence that God chooses a side, I believe we are called to do the same. We are called to side with the poor. We are called to defy the powers of death, fear and scarcity not just for ourselves, but also for one another.
Are we truly working to dismantle the systems and structures that keep all from accessing the abundance that God created? God has chosen a side. Are you ready to choose a side?
The message is an excerpt from “God chooses a side…and calls us to do the same” by Tuhina Verma Rasche in the April 2020 issue of Gather magazine. Today is the eighth Sunday after Pentecost.
