Isn’t it marvelous that God comes in the form of a human child? Babies have a wonderful ability to make people smile. Arguments stop, conversation is easier, attention is fixed on a baby being charming.
Maybe God knows that this is the only way to get our attention. Maybe God realizes that we look away from our arguments, disappointments and frustrations at a beautiful and helpless baby, right in our midst. Here is God, born as an irresistible baby, right in the middle of our harried and strife-filled world, miraculously capturing our attention—and our lives—forever.
Today we remember Johann Konrad Wilhelm Loehe, renewer of the church (1872). This message was adapted from “Devotions for the 12 Days of Christmas” by Lois Pallmeyer that appeared in the December 1997 issue of Lutheran Woman Today (now Gather) magazine.
