My waitress arrived, smiling and lovely in a long flowing dress with deep purple and red hues. Seeming to sense my frustration, she listened patiently while the embarrassing story about walking many blocks in the wrong direction tumbled out. I was out of breath by then and unsure what to order. “Just bring me something you love,” I said.
Later I thought about what I’d asked her to do – bring me something you love. Did she wonder whether she had “read me” correctly? What if I hadn’t liked the dish?
Then I thought about what I have to offer, not to diners in a restaurant, but to Christ. If Jesus said to me, “Bring me something you love,” what would I put on the table? My money? My people skills? My resume? Could I trust that what I love, Jesus would love too? What would offering it back to him mean?
Scripture tells us everything was created through Christ and for him. All that we have was first his (Colossians 1:15-16). Could it be true, then, that what I love is already filled to the brim with Christ’s spirit – a taste of heaven on earth?
