Giving thanks is not a magical formula. We do not make anything happen. What we do is offer ourselves (that’s what the offertory at the Eucharist is really about), and then we give thanks for what we know God is doing. We might pray to notice more clearly that we are offering ourselves to be blessed, broken and shared, even as the bread is blessed, broken and shared. It’s quite incomprehensible–this has been going on for more than 2,000 years; each person and community being fed, then blessed and broken to share with others.
