I used to wonder why we are so affected by what happens to the earth. I crave light in the darkness of my northern winter. I come alive again in the spring. While I love the cold of winter and the chill of spring and fall, others love the heat of summer. But we all are affected by the seasons of the earth’s cycles, are we not? And we know now that we are also affected by our consumption of the earth’s bounty. If we eat well, we are healthier and more energetic. The creation story in Genesis helps me answer my wonderings. We were not fashioned out of thin air. God formed Adam from humus, the earth.
Today we celebrate the official first day of summer and remember Onesimos Nesib, translator, evangelist, who died in 1931.This message is adapted from “I Am an Earthling” written by Catherine Malotky in the July/August 2004 issue of Lutheran Woman Today (now called Gather) magazine.
