Here’s a radical thought: Open-heartedness is the way to live. Life is not about protecting ourselves from hurt. It’s not about always being the smartest, the most worldly, the most cynical.
It’s about being a fool—as the dictionary defines a fool—for life: “One with a marked propensity or fondness for something.” Thawing our hearts frees us up to be sacred in this world. In other words, to be ourselves.
This message is adapted from “Thawing the Frozen Heart” written by Clare La Plante in the January/February 2002 issue of Lutheran Woman Today (now Gather) magazine. Today we remember Stephen, deacon and martyr.
