Perhaps you have had an experience with an accident, a serious illness or a close call that made dying a believable reality. The Ash Wednesday liturgy last month invited us to have a symbolic brush with death as someone brushes ashes on our forehead. As we continue in Lent:
- Take the opportunity to get a new perspective, to examine your life afresh, to repent, to enter into the “struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor.”
- Recall how you have flirted with death by sinning “in thought, word, and deed,” by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
- Remember your baptism, and dare to make confession.
- Step into Palm Sunday shedding the dusty, ashen creatures that we all are.
This message was adapted from “Cross-marked and New” by E. Louise Williams that appeared in the October 1999 issue of Lutheran Woman Today (now Gather) magazine. Today is Palm Sunday.
